Oral contraceptives

When it comes to contraception, one of the most popular and widely used options are oral contraceptives. At The Butterfly Clinic, we offer the combined pill (COC) and the progesterone-only pill (POP) to help you take charge of your productive health.

The Combined Contraceptive Pill

The Pill

The combined contraceptive (COC) pill, more commonly known as “the Pill”, is a type of birth control that contains two hormones: estrogen and progestin. These hormones work together to prevent pregnancy by suppressing ovulation, thickening cervical mucus, and thinning the uterine lining.

The Progesterone-Only Pill

POP

The progesterone-only pill (POP) is a form of oral contraceptive that contains progestin, a synthetic form of the hormone progesterone. This contraceptive pill is a suitable option for women who cannot take estrogen due to medical reasons. The POP primarily works by thickening the cervical mucus, which makes it difficult for sperm to reach the uterus and fertilise an egg.

Long Term Contracepiton

Reversible Contraception

At The Butterfly Clinic, we understand that finding a contraceptive method that fits your lifestyle and provides peace of mind is incredibly important. Long-acting reversible contraceptives are designed to give you extended protection against pregnancy, with the convenience of not having to remember to take a pill every day. Reliable long-acting contraceptive options available at our clinic include Implanon, hormonal and copper IUDs, and depot contraception injections.

Contraceptive implant

Implanon

Implanon, also known as the contraceptive implant, is a small, flexible rod about the size of a matchstick that is inserted under the skin of the upper arm, providing 99.8% effective birth control for up to three years. It releases a progestin hormone called etonogestrel, which prevents pregnancy by inhibiting ovulation, thickening the cervical mucus, and thinning the lining of the uterus.

Hormonal IUD

This is a small, T-shaped intrauterine device (IUD) placed inside the uterus that provides long-acting contraception. It releases a progestin hormone called levonorgestrel, which provides over 99% effective birth control for up to seven years. It works by thickening the cervical mucus, inhibiting sperm movement, and thinning the lining of the uterus, making it less receptive to implantation.

IUD

Copper IUD

A copper intrauterine device (IUD) is a small, T-shaped device made of plastic and wrapped with copper wire that is inserted into the uterus as a form of long-acting reversible contraception. The copper IUD is a hormone-free contraceptive option that relies on the natural spermicidal properties of copper to prevent pregnancy. It has an efficiency of over 99% and prevents pregnancy for up to 10 years.

Depot Injection

Contraception Injection

Depot contraception is a form of birth control, which involves receiving a hormonal injection, typically containing progestin, every three months. The hormone in the injection suppresses ovulation, preventing the release of eggs from the ovaries. It also thickens the cervical mucus, making it difficult for sperm to reach the uterus and fertilise an egg. Additionally, it can thin the lining of the uterus, making it less receptive to implantation.
