What is Menopause?
Menopause is the natural end of a woman's menstrual cycle, and usually occurs between the ages of 45 and 55, but it can happen earlier or later.
It is defined as the time when a woman has not had a period for 12 consecutive months. Menopause occurs due to the reduction of estrogen and progesterone production as women age. The years leading up to menopause are called perimenopause, and a woman's body begins to produce less estrogen and progesterone during this period.
Menopause may also be caused by chemotherapy, pelvic radiotherapy, and the removal of the ovaries (oophorectomy) and/or the uterus (hysterectomy).
